Ongoing Programs

TEEN SPACE

The Novi Public Library has partnered with the City of Novi Parks & Recreation Department, Novi Community School District, and Novi Youth Assistance to offer a Teen Space in the West Side Meeting Room of the Library on Mondays-Fridays 2-5 pm (except over vacation breaks) during the school year. The Teen Space was created for students to “hang out” and socialize when traditional use of the library is not needed, and is open to students in Grades 7-12. Teen Space is not in session during summer months.

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (TAB)

Join the TAB as we create and plan programs for teens at the library. Meeting attendance will count as volunteer time.

DOOR TO FREEDOM: THE ANNE FRANK PROJECT

The Anne Frank Door Project gives participants the opportunity to learn about Anne Frank and the Holocaust. Attendees will first have the chance to hear from a Holocaust survivor and then are asked to interpret Anne Frank’s experience and relate it to their own through art. Each participant will decorate a wooden door and include a meaningful quote and photo of him or herself. Generously supported by the Phillip Elizabeth Filmer Memorial Charitable Trust.

KAPLAN PRACTICE ACT TEST-TAKING SEMINAR

COLLEGE PLANNING AND STRATEGIES

In this free seminar, Sheryl Krasnow of College and Career Counseling Associates, Inc. will cover all of the fundamentals of planning for the often bewildering college admissions process. This session will explain ACT, SAT, PSAT/MNSQT tests, academic planning and activities, visiting college and universities, and merit-based scholarships.

WOW SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY-WRITING WORKSHOP

How important is a scholarship essay? It could mean the difference between paying for college on your own, or winning enough scholarships to go essentially for free. Parents and students, join WOW Writing Workshop for a lively discussion about the myths and facts of scholarship-essay writing. Learn about prompts, voice, choosing a topic and how to stand out from the crowd. Bring paper and a pen, and come prepared to write. (You too, Mom and Dad!)

DOLLARS FOR COLLEGE & FILLING OUT THE FAFSA FORM

In this free seminar, Sheryl Krasnow of College and Career Counseling Associates, Inc. will present an overview of Financial Aid information. This seminar is designed to help students and their families understand the financial aid process. It includes definitions of key terms (scholarships, grants, loans, etc.), sources of funds (federal, state, university and other), college costs, family responsibilities and how to apply. Also, filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) line by line will be explained.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 2015

Team registration forms for Battle of the Books will be available at the Library’s information desk beginning Monday, December 1, 2014. Registration is limited to the fi rst twelve teams to return their registration form. Teams consist of students in 5th or 6th grade that live or attend school in Novi. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Novi Public Library.

 

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS COACHES’ KICK-OFF MEETING

At this meeting, titles for this year’s Battle will be announced, a set of books for each team will be distributed, and a discussion of coaches’ responsibilities will be conducted. Coaches will also have the opportunities to see a DVD of a previous year’s Battle. Bring your questions and, if you’ve been a coach before, your suggestions for “newbies!”
