Spark a ReactionSpark a Reaction: Teen Summer Reading Game

Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the Library or online here.

Beginning Monday, June 16, 2014 and continuing until Saturday, August 2, 2014, sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the Library or online here. This year’s theme is “Spark a Reaction” for tweens and teens going into grades 5-12. Using our website, you will keep track of the time you spend reading. Please come into the Library to collect your prizes, check out books, and attend our activities. Finish 24 hours of reading and you’ll be entered 4 times into our grand prize drawing. Teen volunteers will be on hand to assist you with the registration process and the prize redemption.

Ongoing Programs

TEEN SPACE

The Novi Public Library has partnered with the City of Novi Parks & Recreation Department, Novi Community School District, and Novi Youth Assistance to offer a Teen Space in the West Side Meeting Room of the Library on Mondays-Fridays 2-5 pm (except over vacation breaks) during the school year. The Teen Space was created for students to “hang out” and socialize when traditional use of the library is not needed, and is open to students in Grades 7-12. Teen Space is not in session during summer months.

 

Teen Advisory Board (TAB)

Join the TAB as we create and plan programs for teens at the Library. Meeting attendance will count as volunteer time.

TEEN BOOK CLUB!

Teens in Grades 9-12 are invited to join us each month as we get together to talk about the books that we as a club have selected to read! There will be food, new friends and fun! And best of all, our club is totally run by teens! For us, by us! Check the Library’s calendar to see the book we are reading each month.

BETWEEN THE PAGES – TWEEN BOOK CLUB

Kids in grades 5-7 are invited to join us for book discussions, snacks and fun! Our book for June is “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate. The book chosen for July will be “Three Times Lucky” by Sheila Turnage and the book for August will be “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library” by Chris Grabenstein.

TEEN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Interested in volunteering? The Youth & Teen Services Departments are looking for students going into grades 7-12 to assist with the Summer Reading Program. Volunteers are asked to work two-hour shifts once a week for at least four weeks of the program (Jun 16-Aug 2). Volunteers should be able to work with computers and be friendly, outgoing, and enjoy working with people of all ages. Application available by clicking below and in the Library.

You must have a workers permit to volunteer. The workers permit is available at the Library or at your school.
A work permit is not required if you are obtaining hours for National Honors Society but you do need to fill out this form.

HOT SUMMER FLICK

Cool off at the Library with a recent DVD release on our big screen. Check the Library website after June 1st for the specific title.

TWEEN/TEEN SUMMER ART-BOOK-MAKING CRAFT

Make a memory book out of cool stuff, and collage inside! Come learn from a true crafting artist, Stephanie Duimstra – one of the founders of the Detroit Urban Craft Fair.

ANN ARBOR HANDS ON MUSEUM’S SUMMER SCIENCE FESTIVAL

The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum’s Summer Science Festival features a wide variety of unique, interactive tabletop projects that include science experiments, make-and take activities and art creations.

SPELLING BEE

Participate in The Novi Library’s seventh annual spelling bee for students going into grades 5-6 before you return to school, or come cheer on your favorite speller! If you take part in the spelling bee, be sure to check our web site or come into the library for a list of words that might be included (though this year there will be other words used as well); the list will be available online and in the library Aug. 11. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE SPELLING BEE.
