How do I get a Library card?

Just come in to the Novi Library and bring with you picture identification and some proof of Novi residency.  Acceptable proof includes a valid Michigan driver's license with a current Novi address or picture identification and offical documentation showing your name and Novi address, such as current lease, utility bill, or paycheck.  Residents under 18 years of age need to have a parent present to register for a new card or renew one.

What if I work in Novi but do not live in Novi?

Non-residents who work in Novi and live outside the TLN network may obtain a one-year card, with proof of employment in the city.

What if I live in a different city but would like to come to the Novi Library?

You must get your Library card from the library in the city where you live.  However, if you live in a city whose library belongs to The Library Network (TLN) consortium and has chosen to be one of the reciprocal borrowing libraries, you can use your home library card at the Novi Library.

If your home library is a standalone (does not share the patron database system), you will need to register your home library card with the Novi Library the first time you use it here.    Bring your home library card and photo ID showing your current address to register .  Patrons under the age of 18 need to have a parent present to register their card.

How much does a Library card cost?

Library cards are free for residents!  Renewing your Library card is free.  There is a $2.00 charge if you lose your Library card.

May I purchase a Library card?

If you are not a resident of Novi or of a TLN member library (standalone or shared system), you may purchase a card for $100 / year (the fee will not be pro-rated).

What if I lose my Library card?

Please report a lost card to the library immediately.  The replacement cost for a lost card is $2.00.

Borrowing Library Materials

Frequently asked questions about checking out Library materials:

What do I need to know about borrowing a DVD?

What if the book I want is checked out?

What if the book I want is not owned by the Novi Library, but is owned by another library?

What if I can't find the book I want in the Catalog?

Do I have to return all materials to the Novi Library?

What do I need to know about borrowing movies and games?

Movies and games are available for home use only. To borrow a movie or game, you need to have a Library Network area card.  Watch your due dates as these items have shorter loan periods and late fees are $1 per day.

Please be aware of the following issues regarding our movie and game collections:

  • Library staff check movies and games for damage when they are returned. If you have a problem with a movie or game you have borrowed, please notify the library staff immediately. Do not attempt to repair the item yourself.
  • The patron assumes responsibility for movies and games in their possession. The Library is not responsible for any damage that may occur to patron's DVD (etc) players while using the Library's materials.
  • Overdue notices are sent after 7 days. You will be sent a bill for a replacement if it is overdue 28 or more days.
  • You may return movies and games in the library drop box.

What if the book I want is checked out?

You can get on the waiting list for the book, so when the book is returned, we will hold it for you and notify you by mail.  To place a request for a book, you can use our Web Catalog and the "Place Hold" button for the book you want.  You will need a valid Library card.  Or you can contact us, and a librarian will be happy to assist you.  If you send another person to pick up the item, that person must bring the notification or your library card in order to check out the item.

What if the book I want is not owned by the Novi Library, but is owned by another library?

You may request that a library that owns the book, and is willing to lend it, send it to the Novi Library for you.  When the book arrives at Novi, we will notify you by email, phone or mail.  To place a request for a book, you can use our Web Catalog and the "Place Hold" button for the book you want.  You will need a valid Library card and pin.  Or, you may call us or stop by the Information Desk, and a librarian will be happy to assist you.  Keep in mind that not all materials can be interloaned from other libraries.  If you have questions, feel free to contact us.  If you send another person to pick up the item, that person must bring the notification or your library card in order to check out the item.

What if I can't find the book I want in the Catalog?

We might be able to get the book from another library outside our local Catalog system.

Do I have to return all materials to the Novi Library?

Books (other than OCLC and MeLCat) may be returned to any TLN library.  However, audiovisual materials should be returned to the Novi Library.
